Boruto will Surpass Naruto – Explained!

Boruto has been filled with many surprises since it’s release: Boruto was able to effectively produce shadow clones before entering the academy, manipulate various elements, and even provided foreshadowing to a highly-anticipated, futuristic battle with a villain named Kawaki.

It is very possible Boruto will be the first shinobi to produce both the Rasengan and Chidori simultaneously. Or, as a secondary hypothesis, Boruto may be the first shinobi to fuse both wind and lightning into the Rasengan. For those who forget, Kakashi was the first shinobi to independently use both Rasengan and Chidori; however, Kakashi never used both of these moves together. Furthermore, as a fun fact, Kakashi created the Chidori because he was unable to fuse lightning with the Rasengan. Rasengan is a move only using Form Manipulation. Adding an element would make it much more powerful and because Kakashi was unable to he thus created the Chidori.

In this article we will discuss:

1. Boruto’s nature transformations

2. The Rasengan

3. The Chidori

4. The two hypotheses

Boruto’s Nature Transformations

Thus far, we know Boruto can manipulate three nature transformations: Wind, Lightning, and Water release. It should be noted Boruto has not actually combined these together in a single move, but rather oftentimes uses separate moves with differing elements. Sometimes, we see these moves in rapid succession of one another, but as of now, Boruto has not effectively merged two separate elements into a single move.

In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 28, we witnessed Boruto manipulating and utilizing wind with lightning (note: I did not say conjoined). During a confrontation with the new “7 Swordsmen of the Mist,” Boruto lunged forward using wind release, throwing two kunais concatenated with lightning and yelling, “this is my lethal…Boruto Stream!”

In chapter 16 titled Boruto: Vessel, we see a brief battle between Naruto and Boruto. Boruto throws a Rasengan at Naruto, which Naruto effectively dodges. We then see the first water ninjitsu from Boruto called Billowing Wave; he immediately uses a lightning move called Thunderclap Arrow. The two moves align together to produce electrical waves, however Naruto produces an earth wall to prevent the move from connecting. Again, these were two separate moves, but with different elements.

Boruto and the Rasengan

During Boruto: Naruto the Movie, we see Boruto utilize the Rasengan (although a bit smaller than normal-sized); during the above chapter, we see Boruto use the Rasengan at a normal size. Although Boruto calls the move Rasengan, many fans have referred to it as the Vanishing Rasengan. Essentially, Boruto produced Rasengan and subconsciously fused what is believed to be wind element, and upon release, the Rasengan disappears.

Rasengan is a move only using Form Manipulation. Adding an element would make it much more powerful — something Kakashi never did. Thus, adding the wind element may perhaps make this move stronger than Boruto’s predecessors. As stated previously, Kakashi was unable to merge Lightning Release with Rasengan’s Form Manipulation, thus he does not use it.

The Chidori

Although I will not go too much detail about the origins of the Chidori, we know that Kakashi created and mentored Sasuke in acquisition of the lightning-based skill. Furthermore, typically only sensory-type ninjas can use Chidori because the move results in tunnel vision; thus, the Sharingan helps alleviate the risks of using Chidori. Although Boruto does not have the Sharingan, his eye dojutsu named Jougan’s features are still a mystery and thus may compensate the move’s risk factor.

Who will teach Boruto the Chidori? None other than Sasuke. During Boruto: Naruto the Movie, Sasuke agrees to mentor Boruto. Because Boruto can successfully manipulate lightning-release, we can presume the signature move will be taught by Sasuke; after all, in Episode 1 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, we see Boruto using a sword (known as kenjutsu) which most likely will be a skill also reinforced through Sasuke’s teachings.

The two hypotheses

Boruto may perhaps be the first ninja to simultaneously use Chidori and Rasengan. Although we presume Boruto is fusing wind with Rasengan, the Chidori hypothesis is based on Boruto’s ability to use lightning and the fact his mentor is Sasuke. If Boruto does not use Chidori, there is also the hypothesis that Boruto will fused lightning with Rasengan — a feat Kakashi was unable to complete (I know, I have said this numerous times). However, it could absolutely be possible because, as mentioned a few times, Boruto subconsciously used wind with his Rasengan. If this is true, and natural, then the real challenge would be using lightning as well. Since it is a Naruto series, perhaps this is more likely. What do you think? Do you believe Boruto will simultaneously use Chidori and Rasengan? Or perhaps outdo Kakashi and fuse lightning and wind into a single Rasengan?
